Julie Taymor

Taymor is perhaps most recognised for her work on The Lion King, which opened on Broadway at the New Amsterdam Theatre in 1998. She both directed the musical and designed the costumes, masks, and puppets for it in addition to helping create lyrics for the additional songs added to the musical. The Lion King earned Taymor a Tony Award both for her costume designs and for Best Direction of a Musical, the latter of which she has the honour of being the first woman to receive. The Lion King is still playing on Broadway today and has earned over $1 billion.
