A Life of Theatre
Madame Lucia Elizabeth Bartolozzi Vestris was the jack of all trades of the English stage in the early 19th century. Her career began at just 18 when she appeared as Proserpina in the opera Il Ratto di Proserpina. In the subsequent 40 years, she became famous not only for her singing voice, but for her adaption to "breeches" roles (and the controversy that came from doing so) and for her advances in theatre design later in her career as a theatre manager.
